Police: At Least Six Dead in Illinois Dust-Storm PileupPolice said visibility on Interstate 55 fell nearly to zero; more than 30 injured people were taken to hospitals.
- The crashes occurred late in the morning, involving 40 to 60 passenger cars and multiple tractor-trailers, two of which caught fire.
- Interstate 55 was closed in both directions in Montgomery County, about 120 kilometres north of St. Louis.
- Police attributed the crashes to dirt blown from fields, which reduced visibility to nearly zero.
- Authorities established staging areas away from the crash site to help travellers reunite with friends and family.
"The cause of the crashes is due to excessive winds blowing dirt from farm fields across the highway, leading to zero visibility," Starrick said at a news conference.— Illinois State Police Maj. Ryan Starrick said at a news conference.
