ZZ Top drummer Frank Beard dies at 77Band spokesperson Bob Merlis confirmed the death at Beard’s ranch in Richmond; no cause had initially been disclosed.
- According to Bob Merlis, Beard was in hospice care and died surrounded by his family at his ranch in Richmond, Texas.
- At the time of his death, ZZ Top was touring the United States with “The Big One!” after abruptly canceling a Los Angeles concert in early August.
- Beard joined ZZ Top in 1969, followed by the band’s debut album in 1971 and its commercial breakthrough with “Tres Hombres” in 1973.
- After a three-year hiatus, full beards became the group’s trademark, while Beard remained the only member to keep a moustache.
We have lost a great friend and colleague, and the world has lost one of the most naturally innovative drummers and a great and true son of Texas.— Band member Billy Gibbons, announced on Instagram
