Nearly Blind Refugee Found Dead After DetainmentA 56-year-old refugee was found dead five days after being dropped off alone by Border Patrol at a closed coffee shop in Buffalo, NY.
- Nurul Amin Shah Alam, a refugee with limited English and mobility issues, was discovered deceased five days after his release from Erie County jail.
- Border Patrol agents left him alone at a closed coffee shop without notifying his family or lawyers, despite his disabilities.
- Buffalo’s mayor condemned the incident as deeply disturbing and called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
- The case raised serious concerns about federal treatment of refugees and demands for transparency at local, state, and federal levels.
"The Border Patrol officers had no protocol of what to do with a disabled man who doesn’t speak English, who is confused and lost. And you know what they did? They dropped him at a closed coffee shop. That’s why we do not cooperate with ICE, Homeland Security and Border Patrol," Ryan said.— Buffalo Mayor Sean Ryan, commenting on the Border Patrol's handling of Shah Alam and the policy implications.
