- Beginning in 2030, all public school students in Texas will be required to read selected Bible passages during class.
- The Texas State Board of Education approved a statewide mandatory reading list that includes biblical texts for students from kindergarten through grade twelve.
- The updated social studies curriculum emphasizes U.S. and Texas history while reducing coverage of world history and cultures.
- The policy sparked debate, with supporters highlighting national heritage and critics warning against imposing religious beliefs in public education.
Today’s vote by the Texas State Board of Education is yet another example of Texas politicians pushing Christianity on public schoolchildren. Public schools should not force children to read Bible stories. This policy is part of a broader movement ... to misuse public schools to impose one narrow set of religious beliefs and indoctrinate a new generation of Americans in the lie that America is a Christian country.— Rachel Laser, president and CEO of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, in a lengthy statement about the Texas board vote
