Quick Glance: New plan to solve Colorado River water crisis
  • Officials aim to solve the Colorado River crisis by reducing water supplies for farms and cities in the Southwest.

  • The groundbreaking deal to cut water use from the Colorado River comes after months of negotiations.

  • Under the proposed alternatives, cuts would reach about 2 million acre-feet per year.

  • Water managers who negotiated the proposed agreement expect a large portion of the cuts to happen over the coming year, resulting in a reduction of water use by 1.5 million acre-feet by the end of 2024.

Quick Glance: As flood dangers approach, look inside the scientific guessing that keeps Utah water managers awake at night.
  • According to Jesse Stewart, deputy director of Salt Lake City Public Utilities, in order to decide how much water to release from reservoirs — and when — water managers must assess data from many sources.

  • Salt Lake City Public Utilities has been releasing water from its reservoirs, especially Little Dell, for several months after authorities noticed the snowpack was increasing, according to Laura Briefer, director of the department.

  • Because of the expected large runoff, water managers may release more water from Little Dell this year than usual, she added.

  • "Flood water flows downstream," explained Rathje.
