Amanal Petros takes European gold with championship recordIn Birmingham, the 31-year-old broke away after 25 kilometres and completed the distance in 2:09:11.
- Because of apparently unresolved problems with the electronic entry authorization required for EU citizens, Petros reached Birmingham only the day before Sunday’s start.
- The downhill course, with many sharp turns, made it difficult for runners to find a rhythm, leading Petros to describe the race as exceptionally demanding and probably among the toughest of his career.
- After 25 kilometres, he pulled away from the field, won his first European Championship gold medal and set a championship record of 2:09:11.
- After arriving in Germany as an unaccompanied refugee from Ethiopia, Petros only discovered running at the age of 16.
I have had no contact with my family for more than two years. I don’t even know where they are. At some point a limit was reached, and I couldn’t go on.— Amanal Petros, in an interview with the Frankfurter Rundschau (2022) – about his family amid his flight
