Why Frederick Douglass’s July 5 Speech Still ResonatesJames West Davidson praises the 1852 Rochester address as a blend of patriotism, criticism of slavery, and hope.
- James West Davidson considers Frederick Douglass’s July 5, 1852, address in Rochester, New York, America’s most remarkable Independence Day oration.
- Because July 4, 1852, fell on a Sunday, commemorations took place the following day.
- Douglass challenged the celebration because freedom and independence remained denied to millions of enslaved people.
- He combined fierce criticism with hope, urging Americans to apply the nation’s founding principles to the present and future.
