Two Die as Firefighting Helicopters Collide Near AthensThe four crew members were recovered; two survived, while strong winds hampered efforts to collect water from the sea.
- One Greek and one Danish crew member died in the crash, while the two survivors were Greek and British nationals.
- The fire began Friday near Agios Vasileios; 254 people were evacuated by sea on Friday and another 12 on Saturday.
- Nearly 500 firefighters and 23 aircraft were deployed, but powerful gusts partly prevented water collection from the sea; Kandili, Agia Skepi and Toutouli were evacuated.
- In southwestern France, the Gironde megafire remained within its perimeter Sunday after burning 420 square kilometers of forest in 10 days and forcing 224,000 people to flee.
A pristine forest, a paradise, was surrendered to the hands of the fire. There are no words to explain what has happened. Destruction. Total destruction.— Minas Tzortzanis, a local farmer, said Saturday, describing the impact of the wildfire near Megara, west of Athens.
