Trump Featured on 24K Gold Coin for 250th AnniversaryThe U.S. Fine Arts Commission approved a 24-karat gold coin featuring Trump, sparking debate over living leaders on currency.
- The U.S. Commission of Fine Arts unanimously approved a gold coin design showing Trump for the nation's 250th anniversary.
- The coin’s image is based on a photograph displayed earlier in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C.
- Critics argue that featuring a sitting president on currency breaks with founding-era traditions opposing monarch-like symbolism.
- The Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee was not consulted on the coin’s design, raising questions about its legality.
Because this is what kings and dictators do and there’s no getting around that," Scarinci said. "This is a democracy, not a monarchy, not a dictatorship. And democracies do not put their elected leaders on coins.— Donald Scarinci, member of the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee, said during the committee’s public meeting last month.
