- Since April 2022, masks are no longer mandatory in supermarkets and many indoor spaces, but remain required nationwide on local transport and airplanes.
- The hotspot rule allows federal states to enforce extra protective measures like mask mandates if hospitals face critical infection levels; so far only Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Hamburg have applied it.
- Businesses and institutions may continue mask requirements under their own policies, especially cultural venues such as theaters and museums in Berlin.
- Experts advise wearing FFP2 masks due to high infection rates, particularly to protect vulnerable populations and in settings with close contact or poor ventilation.
If you want to protect yourself and others from infection, you should definitely wear a mask.— Physicist Eberhard Bodenschatz from the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization in Göttingen

- A Leon County Circuit Court judge rejected DeSantis’ position, and the governor announced he would appeal.
- DeSantis’ education commissioner moved to withhold funds from Alachua and Broward, two of eleven school boards with mask mandates.
- Miguel Cardona said on August 31 that federal funds could cover such state penalties; in Broward, they equaled 0.016 percent of annual revenues.
- A Quinnipiac poll found 98 percent support among Democrats, but only 24 percent among Republicans; 72 percent opposed mask mandates.
Governor DeSantis has made it clear that he wants to put politics over keeping schools open and keeping our economy strong. But today’s ruling makes clear that he’s overstepped his authority,— Charlie Crist, a candidate for the 2022 Democratic nomination for Florida governor, said in a written statement after the Leon County Circuit Court ruling against DeSantis' position on mask mandates.

- Several lawmakers advocate for increased Covid-19 testing protocols on Capitol Hill amid ongoing infections.
- Earlier in May, House and Senate leaders declined rapid testing offers to prioritize frontline healthcare resources.
- Senator Roy Blunt recommends regular testing for all members and staff, especially those who travel frequently.
- A mask mandate was implemented on the House floor, though concerns remain about testing access and delays.
We have the space for it," Blunt said. "I think we could find a place to do it. I think we could do it in a way that every member of the Senate, staff got a test every couple weeks or a month and everyone traveling got one every time they traveled."— Roy Blunt told reporters he’s pressed leaders and the Capitol physician’s office in the last several hours about how to mitigate risk of members traveling and catching the virus, and proposed a testing regimen for Senate members, staff, and travelers.
