DeSantis’ Quiet Support for Florida Election DeniersCord Byrd was a featured speaker at a 2022 seminar promoting false claims about the 2020 election before becoming Florida’s secretary of state.
- Cord Byrd participated in a summit led by Cleta Mitchell that promotes election fraud conspiracies and trains activists.
- While publicly avoiding direct claims, DeSantis privately backed activists questioning election legitimacy and influencing policy changes.
- The group Defend Florida, alleging widespread fraud, regularly met with DeSantis’ officials and helped pass restrictive election laws.
- Election officials warn these actions amplify baseless accusations, eroding public confidence in Florida’s election processes.
Even if you tell me it was 100% above board, it doesn’t sit well with people. They’re not going to have confidence in that. Obviously, the more you spread it out, the more opportunities there are, you know, to not do it with integrity.— Ron DeSantis; remarks about election integrity and the voting process in Florida's 2020 election.
