Quick Glance: Discovery of Shackleton's Final Shipwreck off Canada's Coast
  • The wreckage of Sir Ernest Shackleton's final ship, a renowned Irish-British explorer of Antarctica, was located off the coast of Labrador in Canada, 62 years after its disappearance.

  • Utilizing sonar scans, the Quest was spotted on Sunday evening submerged under 390 meters of turbulent, icy water, as reported by the society.

  • The revelation of the Quest was described as "deeply moving" by John Geiger, the leader of the Shackleton Quest Expedition, during his statement on Wednesday.

  • With its discovery now confirmed, the subsequent action involves deploying remotely operated vehicles to capture visual representations of its remnants.

Quick Glance: The 'Doomsday Glacier' Melts Faster Than Expected
  • Thwaites Glacier is one of the bulwarks guarding against the collapse of this critical ice sheet, most of which rests below sea level and holds enough ice to raise the ocean by 3.3 meters or almost 11 feet.

  • Thwaites Glacier, often dubbed the 'Doomsday Glacier,' already accounts for 4 percent of the planet’s sea level rise and loses 50 billion tons of ice annually.

  • The study found that the pulsing of tides allow water to creep further under the glacier and weaken its anchor to the seabed.

  • Predicting the speed of ice loss and sea level rise is a technological challenge that computers have only recently been able to handle.

Quick Glance: Record Low Antarctic Sea Ice Unlikely Without Climate Change, Scientists Say
  • The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) found that the historically low levels of sea ice around Antarctica in 2023 would have been extremely unlikely to occur without the influence of climate change.

  • Using a large climate dataset called CMIP6, BAS researchers investigated this unprecedented sea ice loss and discovered that the extreme decline in sea ice in 2023 was made more likely by climate change.

  • Scientists used models to predict that after such extreme sea ice loss, not all of the sea ice around Antarctica returns, even after twenty years.

  • Antarctic sea ice is a critical factor in our overall understanding of climate change, influencing ocean currents, weather patterns, and marine life in the region.
