- President Donald Trump announced on Feb. 20, 2026 that he would order identification and public release of government records related to extraterrestrial life, UAP and UFOs.
- The directive, posted on Truth Social, instructed the Secretary of War and other relevant departments and agencies to start locating and disclosing any and all information connected to those matters.
- The announcement followed former President Barack Obama's offhand remark that aliens are 'real' and his subsequent clarification that no evidence of contact was seen during his presidency.
- Republican critics such as Rep. Thomas Massie characterized the move as a distraction from the Jeffrey Epstein controversy, and a 2024 Pentagon study found no evidence of extraterrestrial technology.
Based on the tremendous interest shown, I will be directing the Secretary of War, and other relevant Departments and Agencies, to begin the process of identifying and releasing Government files related to alien and extraterrestrial life, unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP), and unidentified flying objects (UFOs), and any and all other information connected to these highly complex, but extremely interesting and important, matters,— Donald Trump via Truth Social; post announcing the declassification order
