EU Mandates USB-C Charging Ports by Mid-2024By mid-2024, the EU requires many devices to adopt USB-C, aiming to cut 1,000 tons of electronic waste annually.
- Starting mid-2024, the EU will enforce USB-C charging ports for smartphones, tablets, cameras, and other electronics.
- The European Parliament expanded the rule to include laptops and smartwatches, setting a 40-month transition period for laptops.
- Consumers can buy devices without chargers, reducing cable clutter and saving approximately 250 million euros annually.
- The EU projects a reduction of about 1,000 tons of e-waste yearly and plans to establish a wireless charging standard within two years.
"That saves resources, protects the climate, and keeps consumers' nerves intact."— Anna Cavazzini, Green Party Member of the European Parliament, commenting on the EU agreement on universal charging standards
