- On Feb. 23 the State Department ordered non-essential personnel and eligible family members to leave the U.S. embassy in Beirut due to rising concerns about a possible military conflict with Iran.
- The embassy remains operational with core staff in place as a temporary safety measure while maintaining the ability to assist U.S. citizens, and remaining personnel face restrictions on personal travel.
- A source at the embassy reported 50 people were evacuated, and Beirut airport officials said 32 embassy staff and family members flew out on Monday.
- The pullback comes amid one of the largest U.S. military build-ups in the Middle East and stalled nuclear talks with Iran, with envoys set to meet in Geneva on Thursday and the U.S. secretary of state slated to visit Israel on Saturday.
I am the one that makes the decision, I would rather have a Deal than not but, if we don’t make a Deal, it will be a very bad day for that Country and, very sadly, its people, because they are great and wonderful, and something like this should never have happened to them.— Donald Trump, in a post on Truth Social, describing the consequences if no deal is reached
