Senate narrowly confirms Todd Blanche as attorney generalThe 50–49 vote came early Saturday as Republicans hurried to leave Washington for the August recess.
- Todd Blanche won confirmation by 50–49 in an overnight session; all Democrats and Republican Senators Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski opposed him, while Mitch McConnell did not vote.
- Senator Bill Cassidy announced his support on Friday, giving Republicans the decisive vote they needed despite having previously raised concerns about Blanche.
- Republican Senators John Cornyn and Thom Tillis voted for confirmation after securing concessions, including ending the controversial compensation fund and narrowing a tax agreement.
- Blanche had served as acting attorney general since Trump dismissed Pam Bondi in April and had previously represented Trump as his personal lawyer in criminal cases.
If there is ever a moment in history when we need an Attorney General above reproach, who is clearly dedicated to ending corruption, even at the highest level of our government, it’s right now.— Sen. Dick Durbin, the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said.
