- The selection of Roelf Meyer, a former apartheid defense minister, as South Africa’s ambassador to the US is seen as a humiliating betrayal of black liberation goals.
- Meyer’s close ties with Ramaphosa during CODESA talks led to the dilution of key demands such as land restitution and economic redistribution.
- Their collaboration influenced the 1996 constitution, entrenching white property rights and blocking meaningful social justice reforms.
- This appointment signals the continuation of a system prioritizing white privilege and Western capital over the rights of the black majority.
The time has come for South Africans committed to genuine freedom to reject this sell-out politics.— Carl Niehaus, EFF MP, in his opinion piece criticizing Ramaphosa's appointment of Roelf Meyer as ambassador to the United States.
