  • EFF leader Julius Malema defended his statement that the party would consider entering a coalition with the ANC if EFF deputy president Floyd Shivambu was appointed as finance minister.

  • Malema warned that Eskom will move to stage six load-shedding after the elections and strongly criticized the current officials in charge.

  • He emphasized that Shivambu is an expert on the country's economy, the continent, and the world at large, and has not stolen any money.

  • Malema stated that the escalation of power outages after the elections is due to the incompetence of officials, not sabotage.

Quick Glance: US Legislators Issue Warning Over Arrests of Citizens Serving in Israeli Army
  • Six US Congress legislators have cautioned President Cyril Ramaphosa that arresting dual South African-Israeli citizens who served in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) will have 'consequences for the US-South Africa relationship'.

  • The legislators, representing both Republican and Democratic parties, also questioned Ramaphosa about measures to protect Jewish South Africans from rising anti-Semitism and hostile statements by senior government officials.

  • The signatories include four Republicans - Joe Wilson, Maria Elvira Salazar, James Baird, and Michael Waltz - along with two Democrats, Jared Moskowitz and Josh Gottheimer.

  • US legislators seek responses from Ramaphosa and highlight potential 'dire consequences' if dual South African-Israeli nationals serving in the IDF are falsely accused.

Quick Glance: Court Rejects Delayed ANC Bid to Block Use of MK Trademark by Zuma's MK Party
  • The KwaZulu-Natal High Court has dismissed the ANC’s bid to prohibit Jacob Zuma’s MK party from using the names and symbols of its disbanded anti-apartheid military wing.

  • The judgment handed down allows the recently-established MK party, led by former president Jacob Zuma, to use the 'uMkhonto we Sizwe' name and symbols.

  • The judgment highlighted that the ANC only considered the consequences of the name and symbols' use after Zuma publicly declared his support for the MK party.

  • The court deemed the ANC's delayed application as 'self-created' due to the responsibility falling on party secretary general Fikile Mbalula to ensure timely action.

ANC’s message to medical aid users: Stop ‘resistance’ to R200bn NHI plan
Quick Glance: ANC Urges Medical Aid Users to Halt Resistance to R200bn NHI Plan
  • Parks Tau dismissed criticism of the proposed R200 billion National Health Insurance (NHI) as 'resistance' by private healthcare users, who he said were effectively subsidized by the state.

  • He reiterated the ANC's stance that a single-fund system will follow if President Cyril Ramaphosa signs the NHI Bill, passed by parliament in December.

  • Clause 49 of the bill envisions 'tax amendments' to be gazetted by the finance minister to finance the insurance scheme's single fund, which the treasury says will need about R200 billion to run.

  • Debate during the National Election Debate highlighted the challenges of the country's two-tier healthcare system and the need to ensure quality healthcare for all.

Quick Glance: EFF's Shivambu as Finance Minister Would Truly Spook the Markets
  • In typical EFF fashion, politician Julius Malema recently made the controversial statement that the EFF would only consider a coalition with the ANC after the elections if EFF deputy president Floyd Shivambu is appointed finance minister.

  • DA leader John Steenhuisen did not mince his words at the recent launch of his party’s Western Cape manifesto in Paarl, in the Drakenstein Municipality.

  • Steenhuisen warned that under a coalition with Shivambu as finance minister, the EFF would unleash its destructive economic policies to turn South Africa into the next Venezuela or Zimbabwe.

  • Investment strategist Izak Odendaal from Old Mutual Wealth says it is unlikely that Shivambu would take on what is arguably the most important Cabinet position, even in the event of an ANC-EFF coalition.

Naledi Pandor is treading the Pik Botha path to SA’s diplomatic oblivion
Quick Glance: South Africa's Foreign Policy Under Scrutiny
  • In a mirror image of Pik Botha’s missions during apartheid to sell South Africa's 'good intentions' to the US, International Relations and Cooperation Minister Naledi Pandor is striving to defend her government's somewhat battered foreign policy.

  • South Africa seems to believe that maintaining good relations with the White House allows it to challenge US sentiments, values, and interests in international relations without jeopardizing its economic ties.

  • Following the Ukraine invasion and our misguided stance, it is crucial for South Africa to rediscover its democratic foundations and advocate for ordinary people across the continent who seek transparent and accountable freely elected governments.

  • A recurring pattern emerges: South Africa takes hasty positions and hastily retraces its steps when faced with diplomatic repercussions. The ANC now confronts the chilly winds of disapproval, struggling to cope, partly due to its overwhelming commitment to sanctimonious ideological rhetoric that clouds its judgment.
