- The City Council is scheduled to vote October 22; the bill would halt new licenses and phase out carriages by June 1, 2028.
- Investigators said tourist Romanch Mahajan died after an out-of-control horse caused the carriage to overturn.
- The proposal provides unionized drivers with job placement, training, career counseling, and financial compensation.
- The Transport Workers Union opposes the measure, saying its economic support for workers would be inadequate.
Horse-drawn carriages have long been part of New York City's history, but in an increasingly busy Central Park, this tradition has become a growing public safety liability. Next week, the Council will take decisive action by voting on Romanch's Law to protect New Yorkers, visitors, and the horses themselves.— Julie Menin, City Council Speaker, in a statement
