Arson Strikes Mississippi’s Largest SynagogueA 19-year-old admitted using gasoline to ignite the fire at Beth Israel, severely damaging the historic Jackson building.
- Stephen Spencer Pittman set fire to Beth Israel Congregation early Saturday, using gasoline as an accelerant.
- He confessed to targeting the synagogue due to its Jewish association, calling it the ‘synagogue of Satan.’
- The blaze caused significant damage to the library and sanctuary, making the building unusable for an extended period.
- Federal and local authorities continue their investigation amid strong community support and condemnation of the attack.
The intentional burning of a Jewish house of worship — especially one with a storied history — causes fear and raises the specter of antisemitism and hate.— Carole Zawatsky, CEO of The Tree of Life, commenting on the fire at Beth Israel.

- Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, 41, drove a car filled with gasoline and fireworks into Temple Israel near Detroit.
- The FBI characterized the assault as a terrorism act influenced by the Iran-backed Hezbollah group aimed at the Jewish community.
- Before the attack, Ghazali purchased an AR-style rifle, ammunition, and conducted online searches related to Hezbollah and violent incidents.
- His actions were partly motivated by the recent deaths of his relatives in an Israeli airstrike and were fueled by extremist propaganda.
