- According to the Carinthia State Police Directorate, the 62-year-old left a hut in Mallnitz for a tour in the Ankogel area and sent an acquaintance a photo that same day.
- After he had not contacted her for several days, the acquaintance reportedly notified mountain rescue services.
- A large-scale search launched over the weekend involving several mountain-rescue locating posts, alpine response teams and two police helicopters was unsuccessful, and no further operation is currently under way.
- According to a May 2024 report by the German Alpine Club (DAV), Mosbacher said he had climbed more than 5,500 peaks, including 40 four-thousanders and 16 six-thousanders.
Only in the mountains do I always stick with something. When I'm on the summit, I think: finally, it's done.— Kai Mosbacher, describing his motivation for mountaineering (as reported by SPIEGEL, based on a DAV report).

- The trio from Hesse had spent the previous night at the Olpererhütte and began climbing toward the 3,476-metre Olperer summit at about 7:45 a.m. on Saturday.
- According to ORF and oe24, the three men reached the summit shortly after 11 a.m., rested and then began their descent along the ascent route.
- At about 1 p.m., the son and nephew heard a cry and saw the 64-year-old fall roughly 80 metres across rocky terrain, after which they and other climbers provided first aid and attempted resuscitation.
- Because of the weather, an emergency helicopter could not fly directly to the site, but despite the efforts of rescuers and an alpine police officer, the man died at the scene.
