Italy Criminalizes Femicide with Life SentenceThe new law mandates life imprisonment for gender-motivated female murders, introduced two years after a high-profile killing in 2023.
- Italy’s parliament unanimously passed legislation recognizing femicide as a distinct crime punishable by life imprisonment.
- The law was enacted on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, inspired by the 2023 murder of Giulia Cecchettin.
- Italy becomes one of the few EU countries to legally define femicide as an expression of systemic gender-based power and control.
- Opponents warn of vague legal definitions and emphasize the need for broader gender equality efforts and mandatory education programs.
Femicides will be classified, they will be studied in their real context, they will exist.— Judge Paola di Nicola, one of the authors of the new law, speaking about the significance of the law.
