- A French court rejected an appeal by an elderly couple who received €150 ($165) for a rare Gabonese mask, which later sold for over €4 million ($4.4 million) at auction.
- The court criticized the owners for their carelessness and casualness as they hurriedly sold the property containing the mask without paying attention to its contents.
- The court also rejected a request from the Gabonese government to suspend proceedings. Gabon has filed a separate lawsuit for the handling of stolen goods, accusing Mr. Fournier's ancestor of stealing the mask and never being its rightful owner.
- The mask is an extremely rare artifact of great spiritual value to the Gabonese people, dating back to the 19th century. Sotheby's listing for a similar Ngil mask describes these artifacts as 'among the rarest and most highly celebrated of all African artworks' and essential pieces in top collections of African art.'
