Euclid launches to map the dark cosmosThe mission launched on 1 July from Cape Canaveral to create a three-dimensional map of the universe.
- The €1.4bn (£1.2bn) telescope launched from Cape Canaveral on 1 July at 11:12 local time.
- Euclid was sent to an observing position about 1.5 million kilometres from Earth.
- During a six-year survey, it will map 15,000 square degrees, slightly more than one-third of the sky.
- Euclid will precisely measure the positions of about two billion galaxies up to roughly 10 billion light-years away.
One possibility is that dark energy is actually a fifth force, a new force in the Universe that operates only on huge scales, so it doesn't influence life here on Earth, said Prof Mark McCaughrean, Esa's senior advisor for science and exploration.— Prof. Mark McCaughrean, ESA's senior advisor for science and exploration, in BBC News coverage of Euclid
