- Bears are venturing into populated areas in Japan more frequently, causing attacks on residents and joggers in recent weeks.
- Guidelines advise avoiding eye contact, retreating slowly, and protecting the head and neck by lying face down during attacks.
- Japan's combined population of Asian black and Ussuri brown bears totals roughly 56,000, with habitat shifts due to fewer food sources and warmer winters.
- Local governments face hunter shortages and consider military aid, while citizens purchase protective devices like bells and repellent sprays.
The rise in attacks is a serious problem.— Environment Minister Hirotaka Ishihara expressed this concern to reporters.
