- Proposition 50 aims to give Democrats at least five additional U.S. House seats in the 2026 midterm election.
- If approved, it would temporarily replace congressional maps drawn by the independent commission; authority would return after the 2030 census.
- Supporters frame the measure as a response to Texas’ Republican-boosting redistricting; opponents call it a partisan power grab.
- Although several dozen interviews found sentiment roughly split, all indications suggested passage; opponents had nearly conceded defeat.
I’m voting to take power out of Trump’s hands and put it back in the hands of the people.— Marcia Owens, 48, a vocational nurse in Riverside, explaining why she supports Prop. 50 and why she wants to shift power away from Trump toward the people.
