bbc.com/news/uk-68899130
Quick Glance: Accusation: Leicestershire man recruited as Russian spy
- An individual from Leicestershire is accused of playing a role as a Russian spy in an arson attack on a business with ties to Ukraine. It is also alleged that Dylan Earl is a member of a banned terror group.
- Among the five individuals charged in connection with the incident is Earl, residing in Elmesthorpe near Hinckley. According to the prosecution, Earl is said to have organized and funded the attack for the benefit of the Russian state.
- Prosecutors claim that Earl, 20, conducted "fraudulent activities, research, and reconnaissance of targets," and attempted to "recruit individuals" to assist a foreign intelligence service. Court documents suggest that Earl is connected to the banned terrorist group, the Wagner Group.
- Earl was first arrested on Wednesday, April 10, and is among the first individuals to be charged under the new National Security Act 2023. The Leicestershire man was charged by Counter Terrorism officers on Friday, April 19, with aggravated arson, preparatory conduct, and aiding a foreign intelligence service. He has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear at the Old Bailey on Friday, May 10, alongside the other four men.

- The EU launched a probe into Chinese medical-device procurement, prompted by concerns that the government in Beijing unfairly favors domestic suppliers, risking tensions ahead of Xi Jinping's upcoming visit.
- The investigation will collect information from companies and member states and must be concluded within nine months. If it confirms a lack of reciprocity, the EU could restrict Chinese access to its tenders.
- This move follows a decision last year to begin an anti-subsidy probe into electric vehicles made in China, potentially leading to new tariffs by July.
- Chinese leaders have rebutted European and US criticism of market distortion in favor of domestic firms, but doubts persist regarding Beijing's extensive use of public support.

- In March, Hong Kong saw an increase in home prices for the first time in almost a year following the lifting of property restrictions, leading to a revival in sales.
- The price index for private domestic homes rose by 1.06% from the previous month of February, breaking a 10-month declining trend.
- However, analysts express doubts about the sustainability of this growth as developers work to reduce excess inventory amid high borrowing costs impacting demand.
- The anticipation of prolonged higher interest rates is expected to exert further pressure on the market, potentially causing home prices to decline by an additional 5% to 10% this year if the Federal Reserve's rate adjustments fall short of expectations.

- Nevertheless, prices are expected to remain subdued as property developers rushed to introduce new sales with discounts of up to 30%, attracting buying interest from the secondary market.
- A recent report by real estate agency Ricacorp revealed that 30% of transactions for second-hand homes were sold at a loss in the first quarter, with this trend likely continuing into the second quarter.
