Reviews are nearly evenly divided between supporters and detractors; IndieWire’s David Ehrlich is among the detractors.

Cruise portrays oil tycoon Digger Rockwell and said he plays three characters in the role.

A ten-minute monologue is cited as evidence of Cruise’s verbal precision and rapid, clear delivery.

According to participants, the film’s tone was developed through extensive rehearsals, repeated experimentation, and collective decisions.

I had never read a character like it. It’s really three characters I’m playing.
— Tom Cruise spoke during a Q&A moderated by the article's author after a screening of Digger at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.
