Quick Glance: Oregon Supreme Court Blocks Reelection for Republican Senators
- Tim Knopp, R-Bend, is one of five Republican senators who contested the interpretation of Measure 113 by the state.
- After refusing to attend Senate floor sessions last year, eight Republican lawmakers in the Oregon Senate are prohibited from seeking reelection, ruled the Oregon Supreme Court on Thursday.
- In a unanimous decision that may impact the upcoming legislative session, the court supported the interpretation of Measure 113 by Secretary of State LaVonne Griffin-Valade, the 2022 ballot measure approved by voters with the aim of ending legislative absences.
- In doing so, the court adopted an interpretation of the law acknowledged by the state as difficult to reconcile with its actual language – effectively ruling that the clear intent of voters in passing the measure was more important than the plain wording inserted into the state Constitution.
