- Dolly Parton died on August 25 at age 80, and news of her death shocked the world.
- As a songwriter, she portrayed poverty, heartbreak, and wronged women bluntly while establishing herself in Nashville.
- 'Jolene' became her 1973 country No. 1 hit and was later reinterpreted by Beyoncé, Miley Cyrus, and others.
- Through Dollywood, she turned land in the Smoky Mountains into an amusement park centered on her life.
I didn't want to be domestic. I wanted to be free. I had my songs to sing, I had an ambition and it burned inside me. It was something I knew would take me out of the mountains. I knew I could see worlds beyond the Smoky Mountains.— Dolly Parton, in her 1977 Rolling Stone cover story
