Yle Poll Reveals S2 Support GapsA Yle survey of 48 teachers identifies shortages in materials, training and time as major obstacles in language education.
- Twenty-seven of 48 surveyed teachers said they needed more support teaching Finnish as a second language.
- Forty-two of 48 teachers reported insufficient opportunities or resources for students with different language levels.
- Most requested more S2 teaching materials, while many also reported insufficient training and support.
- Elisa Repo’s study found skills for supporting linguistic diversity fell below curriculum requirements, largely because training was insufficient.
We don't have time to wonder and see whether something can be done during the next parliamentary term. These kids will have outgrown the situation by then.— Marko Jokinen, chair of the Association of Classroom Teachers, on the urgency of taking action to support Finnish-language learning (S2).
