Niedersachsen Blocks Several AfD Candidates in Local ElectionsAt least four AfD politicians are barred from the September 13 local elections due to the party's classification as right-wing extremist.
- The Lower Saxony Office for the Protection of the Constitution classifies the AfD as right-wing extremist, leading to candidate exclusions.
- At least four AfD members, including deputy leader Stephan Bothe, were rejected by election committees for the September 13 vote.
- Election committees acted independently, emphasizing candidates' commitment to democratic constitutional order as a key criterion.
- The AfD accuses authorities of political bias and intends to pursue legal challenges, which can only occur after the election.
From the documents available, it was evidently not even checked whether I actually uphold the constitution. What was checked here was whether I would fit as the domestic-policy spokesperson for the government's line.— Stephan Bothe, AfD vice-chairman for Lower Saxony, in a statement reacting to the Kreiswahlausschuss's decision not to admit his candidacy.
