Key FactsPistorius Pushes Forward on New Military Service Law

Nov 13, 2025 · Reading time: ~45 sec.
Summary created with AI assistance · Source: stern.de

Defense Minister Boris Pistorius largely prevailed in the military service law compromise, but significant challenges remain ahead.

From 2027, all men aged 18 will undergo mandatory assessment, with conscription by lottery if volunteer numbers are insufficient.

The Union succeeded in embedding a growth corridor for troop numbers into law, requiring biannual progress reports to parliament.

Pistorius must submit radical reform plans by Easter and demonstrate their implementation by the end of 2027.

You will not succeed in doing that.
— Boris Pistorius, Minister of Defense, responding to a question about whether he is a prisoner of his own party during an SPD faction meeting.
