- In early September, Japaridze beat Timo Cavelius severely enough to require hospitalization and fractured his jaw after their bout.
- The 29-year-old German judoka will therefore miss the World Championship in Baku because of the jaw fracture.
- The ban prevents the 24-year-old Georgian from being registered for or fighting in any DJB top-tier club again.
- Proceedings are also underway against Japaridze before Georgia’s judo federation, the IJF, and in Germany’s criminal justice system.
Any relativization or even defense of this serious bodily harm is not tolerable for us and incompatible with the core principles of our sport.— Deutscher Judobund (DJB) – official statement on Japaridze's assault case
