Neumann urges security adviser after drone incidentThe guest contributor describes an explosive drone near a Ukrainian transport aircraft at Leipzig/Halle Airport.
- At Leipzig/Halle Airport, Germany’s first reported case involved a suspected drone carrying explosives and an ignition device found just metres from a transport aircraft operated by Ukraine’s Antonov Airlines.
- The perpetrator remains unknown, while the article places the incident at the intersection of domestic security, intelligence services, the armed forces, critical infrastructure and foreign policy.
- According to the article, the National Security Council, created in late 2025, met only on Friday, 7 August 2026, after the incident and apparently by telephone.
- Neumann advocates appointing a national security adviser in the Chancellery to coordinate the council, bring ministries together and support a common strategic direction.
Germany also needs such a security adviser. Not as an all-powerful shadow minister, but as a coordinator in the Chancellery who enjoys the trust of the Federal Chancellor and ensures on a daily basis that security policy is truly cross-government. For a brand-new body without a head, it is above all one thing: headless.— Peter R. Neumann, guest contribution on ntv.de about Germany needing a security adviser
