- Ahead of the EU summit, Meloni told parliament that the price surge mainly resulted from the war in Iran, not Ukraine’s conflict.
- Trump announced an agreement with Vladimir Putin last week to place Russian diesel on global markets to curb prices.
- Meloni warned the move could legitimize Moscow, generate new war revenues, and weaken sanctions leverage.
- Meloni said Moscow had gained little ground since January and called the stalemate the only effective means toward serious talks.
The outcome of this decision is uncertain, while the risks are clear: legitimising Moscow while its bombs continue to rain down on Ukrainian cities, providing new revenue to finance the war, and implicitly weakening the leverage of sanctions.— Giorgia Meloni, in a parliamentary speech ahead of this week's EU summit
