- Japan's population declined to 120.3 million in October 2024, a drop of 898,000 from the previous year.
- The country has one of the world's lowest birth rates, leading to a shrinking workforce and consumer base.
- Only Tokyo and Saitama saw population increases, while 45 other prefectures experienced declines, with Akita showing the largest loss.
- The government is implementing measures to assist young parents, including financial support and wage increases, to boost the birth rate.
We understand that the declining birthrate is continuing because many people who wish to raise children are not able to fulfill their wishes.— Yoshimasa Hayashi, Chief Cabinet Secretary of Japan, spoke about the ongoing challenges related to the declining birthrate.
