Dawit Isaak has been held without trial in an Eritrean prison for 23 years.

Co-founder of Eritrea’s first independent newspaper, Setit, he was arrested in 2001 after it published letters demanding democratic reforms.

His daughter Betlehem Isaak is due to accept the award on his behalf in Stockholm on 19 November.

The Edelstam Foundation is calling for his release, disclosure of his whereabouts, and access to legal representation.

Dawit Isaak is the longest-detained journalist in the world. We are very concerned about his health and his whereabouts, he is not charged with any crime and has been denied access to his family, consular assistance and the right to a lawyer - this is effectively an enforced disappearance.
— Caroline Edelstam, chair of the Edelstam Prize jury
