US Considers Military Withdrawal from Strategic SpainRota hosts 3,000 US troops and five destroyers; withdrawal could impact 10,000 local families and require year-long negotiations.
- The US threatens troop withdrawal from Spain, with the naval base at Rota being a critical and difficult-to-replace asset for the US Navy.
- Morón Air Base near Seville, housing about 300 US personnel, is more likely to be affected than Rota due to its lesser strategic importance.
- A unilateral withdrawal is legally impossible since the usage agreement automatically renews yearly and would mandate up to twelve months of talks if not extended.
- Spain’s foreign minister states that withdrawal is not currently under consideration and highlights Spain’s sovereign control over the bases under international agreements.
Their use must, in accordance with the joint agreements, always be in line with the UN Charter, something that was not the case with the unilateral action against Iran.— Statement by Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares; he stressed that the use of the bases must always be in line with the UN Charter, unlike the unilateral action against Iran.
