- Separatist fighters attacked Indonesian troops attempting to free a New Zealand pilot kidnapped in February.
- Approximately 36 soldiers were at a post in Nduga when the armed rebels opened fire, killing six and leaving many unaccounted for.
- Search and evacuation efforts are hindered by harsh weather and lack of communication in the remote area.
- Rebels demand Indonesian forces cease operations and propose UN-mediated talks for the pilot’s release.
Indonesia’s government must stop its security operation in Papua and be willing to negotiate with our leaders under the mediation of a neutral third party from a United Nations agency.— Sebby Sambom, spokesperson for the rebels, stating the group's demands for negotiation following their attack.

- Separatist rebels in Indonesia's Papua area have released video and photos of a man they claim is a New Zealand pilot who was kidnapped last week.
- "I took him hostage for Papua independence, not for food or drinks," Kogoya said in the video, standing next to the victim.
- "Taking civilians hostage for any reason is unacceptable," Mahfud said late Tuesday in a video statement.
- He stated that while persuasion is the most effective approach for ensuring hostage safety, "the government does not rule out other efforts."
