- Ryan Wellings, 30, is accused of manslaughter, assault, and coercive and controlling behaviour between January 2020 and July 2022; he denies the allegations, while his lawyers cite Dawes’s pre-existing mental-health problems and multiple factors in her decision to take her own life.
- Nicola Atherton testified that Dawes described the first six months as a fairy tale and the relationship afterward as a nightmare and sent photos of alleged injuries, while Debbie Green reported that she became increasingly frightened and showed visible injuries.
- The court heard that Dawes felt let down by Lancashire Police after Wellings apparently contacted her abusively again following his arrest on July 11, 2022, seemingly breaching his bail conditions, without action being taken.
- Dawes left her eight-month-old daughter with a friend on July 22, 2022, before taking her own life on a railway line; her suicide note accused Wellings of killing her, and the trial is continuing.
She just said the first six months were a fairy tale but then it turned into a nightmare. Those were her exact words. Horrendous domestic violence. Horrendous physical abuse.— Kiena Dawes’s words, as relayed by her former teacher Nicola Atherton during court proceedings
