- The EWI model commissioned by the North Rhine-Westphalia Renewable Energy Association projects annual costs around €9 billion lower than in the reference scenario from 2045 under its optimized scenario.
- The VAR scenario could save €7 billion in fixed costs by 2030, but the model indicates that total costs would rise from 2037 and reach €3 billion more per year than in the reference scenario by 2045.
- Under the optimized scenario, onshore wind capacity in 2030 would be 101 rather than 115 gigawatts and photovoltaic capacity 208 rather than 215 gigawatts, while onshore wind capacity in 2037 would be 148 rather than 158 gigawatts.
- If private batteries are not integrated into the energy system, the EWI estimates that additional costs could reach €9 billion per year from 2045, while a related Federal Network Agency regulation could take effect in October.
One cannot simply switch the expansion of renewable energy on and off at the push of a button. If the financial conditions become too unfavorable, the government will leave a large gap in deployment, and then the energy transition will be significantly more expensive for everyone.— Christian Vossler, CEO of LEE NRW, commenting on the cost implications of energy-policy decisions on renewable deployment
