- May links the party’s prospects to Liberal rollbacks of climate policy and cites approved dredging of Burrard Inlet for larger oil tankers, while environmental groups warn of possible risks to local wildlife.
- Luce holds a doctorate from UCLA and previously advised the City of North Vancouver; the Greens placed third there in 2008 and 2015 and fourth in 2019 with 12 per cent of the vote.
- The seat became vacant after Jonathan Wilkinson was appointed Canada’s ambassador to the European Union, with the Liberals nominating Braeden Caley and the Conservatives running Stephen Curran again.
- Polling analyst Éric Grenier considers a Green victory highly surprising and puts the party’s federal support in British Columbia at about five per cent.
It's a risk-free tryout of this MP at most for the next three years. Then there'll be a general election. If you don't like the job Shelly Luce has been doing for you as your MP, well, you've got at most a three-year, risk-free, money-back guarantee.— Elizabeth May, Green Party Leader, commenting on the byelection strategy in North Vancouver-Capilano
