Photographer Documents U.S. Mud-Racing SubcultureThe three-day 4×4 Proving Grounds combines racing and mud pits; Horton says participants travel from Maine through Florida and into Texas.
- Documentary photographer David Horton discovered the event by chance in Lebanon, Maine, while working on another project and returned every year afterward.
- According to Horton, the scene stretches along the U.S. East Coast from Maine to Florida and reaches into Texas, with participants traveling between events with tents or trailers.
- Horton says the nights include concerts, bonfires and private woodland parties with stages and pole dancing; there is no police presence, only private security, and he witnessed few fights.
- The event lasts three days, with Horton photographing from about 11 a.m. until 4 a.m. and walking roughly 10 to 12 miles across the grounds each day.
As far as we could tell, as long as you didn’t kill somebody, it was pretty much anything goes.— David Horton (interview with VICE)
