Perfectly Preserved Mammoth Calf Found in YukonIn January 2022, miners uncovered a nearly intact mammoth calf in Yukon’s permafrost, thrilling scientists and indigenous communities alike.
- Miners in Yukon discovered an exceptionally well-preserved mammoth calf named Nun cho ga in the frozen permafrost.
- The discovery site near the Klondike River is located on traditional lands of the Trʼondëk Hwëchʼin First Nation, who regard the find as deeply significant.
- Paleontologists quickly secured the specimen just before a severe storm threatened to destroy it after excavation.
- Nun cho ga represents only the second nearly complete mammoth calf found globally, marking a remarkable archaeological milestone.
If we hadn't retrieved her right away, she would have been lost in the storm.— Dr. Grant Zazula, paleontologist, describing the urgent rescue of the Yukon mammoth baby.
