- At the first padded practice on Monday, August 3, 2026, at Chuck Noll Field, the Steelers are not scheduled to tackle at all.
- McCarthy calls the decision a risk assessment but still intends to hold a physical training camp.
- Instead, defenders will wrap up ball carriers without taking them to the ground and refine their technique through GPS, video analysis and other sports-science tools.
- McCarthy attributes the change in his philosophy mainly to the NFL’s evolution in 2026 rather than to the age of the roster.
I’d go to jail today if I tried to do that.— Mike McCarthy joked about risking jail by pursuing an aggressive training-camp approach.
