- McCarthy said on The Pat McAfee Show that Rodgers is currently focused on stepping away from football and decompressing before deciding his future.
- Rodgers spent 13 seasons with McCarthy in Green Bay; they won a Super Bowl together, and two of Rodgers’ four MVP awards came during that period.
- Rodgers said at the start of the season that he signed a one-year contract intending to retire afterward, but his performance and the AFC North title leave room for reconsideration, according to the article.
- The Steelers emphasized that McCarthy was not hired solely because of Rodgers; if Rodgers retires, Mason Rudolph and Will Howard would be the quarterbacks available before the draft and free agency.
Yes, I’ve definitely spoken to Aaron a number of times. But I think like anybody who’s played the game for a long time, particularly at this point in their career, it’s important to get away. That’s a normal process. It’s important for all these players to decompress and step away from the season. That’s really the mindset he’s in, and that’s really as far as our conversations have gone about whether he’s coming back or not.— Mike McCarthy on The Pat McAfee Show, about his conversations with Aaron Rodgers and Rodgers’ current mindset on returning
