- The UK government announced three small modular reactors to be constructed on Anglesey by Rolls-Royce, backed by a £2.5 billion investment.
- These factory-made SMRs aim to reduce costs and accelerate deployment, each producing 470 megawatts of power.
- The US expressed disappointment over the decision, advocating for its Westinghouse company instead, potentially straining relations.
- Plans include future larger reactors in Scotland, even though the Scottish National Party opposes nuclear development.
We are extremely disappointed by this decision, not least because there are cheaper, faster and already-approved options to provide clean, safe energy at this same location.— Warren Stephens, US ambassador, expressed disappointment over the UK's decision to choose Rolls-Royce for the SMR construction.
