Taiwan is planning to establish its own satellite system as a backup for communication in crisis situations to reduce reliance on Starlink.

The Taiwan Space Agency (Tasa) has prior satellite experience but is looking to develop telecommunications satellites and requires around 120 Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites.

A contract with Eutelsat Oneweb aims to provide internet connectivity in the short term, but this is insufficient for secure communication.

The space program is viewed as a strategic industry to enhance national security and diversify the economy beyond the semiconductor sector.
