Excel's Copilot function is headed for the Recycle Bin: Microsoft realizes the side pane should be enough for anyone

Key FactsMicrosoft Plans to Retire Excel’s COPILOT() Function

Microsoft says the experimental function will become unavailable after roughly a year of testing for Frontier and Insider customers.

COPILOT() processed natural-language instructions in formulas and worked especially well for text summarization, classification, content generation, and web-based information lookups.

Microsoft advised against using it for numerical calculations, retrieving workbook data, or legally or compliance-sensitive content; an active internet connection and Microsoft 365 Premium were required.

Microsoft says the retirement reflects existing access through the Copilot side pane and Dynamic Action Button (DAB), while the underlying AI features will remain available.
